Sammel Takes 18th at Nationals

LISLE, Ill. – Allegheny College sophomore Sarah Sammel (Pittsburgh/Bethel Park) opened the Gators’ appearance in the 2006 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships this afternoon, placing 18th in the pole vault, clearing 11-0.75 before bowing out of the competition.

Sammel easily cleared the opening height, 10-6.75, before narrowly clipping the bar on her first two attempts at 11-0.75. On her third and final attempt at the height, she sailed over the bar, and pushing her onto the next height.

At 11-6.5, Sammel had a trio of strong attempts at the height, but clipped the bar on each, falling in 18th place overall.

Ashley Johnson of Wilmington College (Ohio) won the event.

Sammel’s competition ends the day for the Gator competitors, as Elizabeth Earley (Venetia/Peters Township) competes in the hammer throw at 1:00 p.m. local time tomorrow.
