Gator Trio Set for Nationals
May 21, 2006 LISLE, Ill. – Three Allegheny College women’s track and field members are heading to the NCAA Division III National Meet, hosted by Benedictine University in Lisle, Illinois.
Emily Pfeufer (St. Marys/Elk County Catholic), Liz Earley (Venetia/Peters Township) and Sarah Sammel (Pittsburgh/Bethel Park), all sophomores, advanced to the final competition of the 2005-06 season in the triple jump, hammer throw and pole vault, respectively, as all three are school records for the Blue and Gold.
Pfeufer’s jump of 38-4.25 on April 15 secured her with the national bid, as she is seeded 15th heading into the competition.
Earley qualified to nationals during the infant stage of the season, and increased her distances throughout the year, as her throw of 166-2 has her seeded 10th among her competitors at the event.
Sammel, the school record holder in the pole vault, is seeded 15th in the pole vault after her clearance of 11-9.75 at the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships.
Narrowly missing her first trip to Track and Field Nationals was junior Scarlett Graham (Farmington/Uniontown), whose time of 4:37.94 in the 1,500-meter run was a mere .07 away from the final qualifier in the event.
The National Meet starts on Thursday, May 25 at 12:00 p.m. (CST). Each of the three Allegheny competitors have their events start action for each of the three days. Sammel starts the Gator competitors in the pole vault, which is set to begin at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, the first event of the competition. Earley and the hammer throw field start day two at 1:00 p.m., while Pfeufer’s triple jump opens the third and final day at 11:00 a.m.
