Gator Men Prepare for Nationals

BEREA, Ohio – In the final meet before the NCAA Division III Nationals, the Allegheny College men’s track and field team tuned up at the Baldwin-Wallace Twilight Last Chance Meet. Strong performances were recorded in spite of less than ideal conditions due to rain and cold.
Ryan Place (Meshoppen/Elk Lake) tuned up for the 5,000-meter run at Nationals, an event he is ranked seventh heading into the championships, by running the 1,500-meters, placing second in a time of 3:59.86, just .3 off of his season best in the event.
Vince Werner (Sheffield) placed fifth in the javelin with a toss of 163-0, preparing for the national meet, where he is ranked 10th in the javelin with a season-best toss of 197-0
Frank Tupta (University Heights, Ohio/Hawken) set a season-best in the shot put with a toss of 49-1, placing ninth, while teammate Pat Confer (Bradford) took 10th with a toss of 47-7.75.
Senior Chris Carrier (Lyndhurst, Ohio/Charles F. Brush) took first in the 3,000-meter steeple chase, running a time of 9:51.92, while teammate Matt Smith (Sayville, N.Y.) took third in a time of 10:01.44.
Aaron Rape (Zelienople/Freedom Area) placed sixth in the 200-meter dash, sprinting to a time of 22.21, his second fastest time of the 2006 outdoor season. Teammate Troy Moles (Royersford/The Hill School) placed 15th, running a time of 23.61.
Senior Sean Laird (Monroeville/Gateway) placed fourth in the long jump, leaping to a distance of 20-7.
Garret Piispanen (Fruita, Colo./Fruita Monument) placed 11th in the 800-meter run, finishing the half-mile in a time of 1:56.60, while Craig Ball (Pittsburgh/Penn Hills) finished in a time of 2:00.18, bettering his previous season best by eight seconds.
