Gators Fall in NCAC Championship

GRANVILLE, Ohio – The Allegheny College Gators fell 11-7 in the championship game of the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament to the Big Red of Denison University. The nine wins in 2006 by the Gators is a team record for wins in a season, surpassing the eight wins they had in 2004 and 2005.

The Big Red and Gators traded goals to start the game, as Emily Deering (Hollis, Maine/Bonny Eagle) (right) found the back of the net, knotting the game at one apiece. Denison then ended the half with a 3-0 run, sending the Gators into halftime with a 4-1 deficit.

Allegheny could only get as close as three in the second half, as the two teams traded goals, Anna Gordon (Portland, Maine/Deering) countered a Denison goal to start the half and cut the Big Red deficit to 5-2. The Big Red scored two consecutive goals over the next four minutes to push their advantage to 7-2. Michelle Dudevoir (West Point, N.Y./ O'Neill) (below) scored the first of her four goals with 20:42 to play in the game, closing the gap to 7-3 before Denison rattled off two more goals to increase the margin to six at 9-3. the Gators fought back, scoring four of the next five goals, one by Deering and a trio of goals by Dudevoir, including back-to-back goals 13 seconds apart, cut the deficit to 10-7 before the Big Red added an insurance goal with 29 seconds to play to give the hosts the 11-7 victory.

Ashley Hughes (Wexford/North Allegheny), who dished out two assists, led the team with three draw controls, while Laura Hoch, who had the team’s other two assists, had two draw controls. The team had 13 ground balls in the loss, as Deering, Katie Murphy (Venetia/Peters Township) and Danie Parsons (Brook Park, Ohio/Magnificat) each had a pair. Sophomore goalkeeper Lesley Stange (Murrysville/Franklin Regional) stopped nine shots in picking up the loss.
