DELAWARE, Ohio – Led by four first place finishes in the first six events, the Allegheny College Gator men’s track and field team has jumped out to a 50-point first-day lead at the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships, hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University.

The Gators ended the first day with 92 points, while host Ohio Wesleyan was in second with 42 points. Wittenberg and Wabash follow close behind with 27 and 23 points, respectively.

The Gators brought home individual titles in the pole vault, javelin throw, shot put and the 10,000-meter run, while also placing in the other two scored events, the decathlon and the long jump.

Conrad Rapp (Medway, Mass./Worchester Academy) (left) picked up the first individual title for the Gators, leaping to a height of 14-3.25 in the pole vault, while teammates Erich Wittmer (Sewickley/Sewickley Academy) and Peter Sotherland (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central) placed third and sixth, respectively, clearing heights of 13-11.25 and 13-3.5, each.

Vince Werner (Sheffield) (right) defended his championship in the javelin with a throw of 188-6, while teammate Robert Campbell (West Newbury, Mass./Pentucket Regional) placed second with a season-best toss of 173-10, earning eight points. Sean Laird (Monroeville/Gateway) rounded out the Gator scorers in the event with a throw of 154-7, placing him sixth.

Sophomore Frank Tupta (University Heights, Ohio/Hawken) (bottom left) rebounded from his third place finish in the shot put during the indoor season to heave a season-long toss of 48-11.75 in his final throw to take the NCAC Championship away from teammate Pat Confer (Bradford), who had a best toss of 48-5.5, also a season best this season. Not to be out-done by his teammates, senior Kitt Tuttle (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) had a season-best toss of 45-5.75, good for third in the competition, giving the Gators 23 points in the event, their highest scoring event thus far into the championships.

Laird, who last weekend placed fourth in the decathlon, the first event of the championships, placed fourth in the long jump, leaping to a distance of 21-0.5.

A pair of Chris’, Carrier (Lyndhurst, Ohio/Charles F. Brush) and Corkins (Horseheads, N.Y.) took first and second in the 10,000-meter run, crossing the tape in the 6.2-mile event in 32:10.92 and 32:39.84, respectively. Marco Dozzi (Pittsburgh/Chartiers Valley) rounded out the Blue and Gold scorers on the day, placing seventh in a time of 33:31.14.

Competition continues tomorrow for the Gators, who are looking for their fourth consecutive title, and seventh overall, a total that would give them the NCAC lead.
