Pfeufer Wins NCAC Multi-Events

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – Allegheny College sophomore Emily Pfeufer (St. Mary’s/Elk County Catholic) won the North Coast Athletic Conference Multi-Event championship, winning by over 100 points, while earning enough points to provisionally qualify to the NCAA Division III National Championships.

Pfeufer, who finished with 4,173 points, which currently puts her 11th in Division III defeated second place Ashley Shaffer by 127 points. Teammate Liz Straus (Kirtland, Ohio) placed third overall with 3,384 points, as the Gators earned 16 points towards their NCAC Championship.

Day 2 began with Pfeufer’s specialty, the long jump, and she excelled, earning 697 points, leaping to a distance of 18-0, an inch away from the Division III Provisional mark in the event, and the new school record. Straus placed fourth in the event with a distance of 13-10.75, good for 364 points.

Pfeufer easily won the javelin throw, the next event, with a toss of 111-1.25, a season best by nearly 23 feet, while Straus took sixth with a throw of 64-2.75. The pair took home 550 and 286 points, respectively.

In the third and final event of the second day, the 800-meter run, the second place heptathelete Ashley Shaffer won, finishing the half-mile in a time of 2:25, while Straus finished eight seconds behind in second place with a 2:33.5, earning her 650 points. In her worst finish of the eight events, Pfeufer took fourth overall, earning 451 points with a time of 2:51.20.

The 16 points the Gators earned in the event place them second after the first section of the championships, as Ohio Wesleyan took second, fourth and fifth, earning 17 points.

The NCAC Championships continue on Thursday, May 4-5, as the squads will travel to Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio.
