Laird Takes Fourth at NCAC Multi-Events

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – Allegheny College senior Sean Laird (Monroeville/Gateway) took fourth of 13 competitors at the North Coast Athletic Conference Multi-Event Championships, hosted by Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio.

Laird ended the two-day, 10-event championship with 5,024 points, while Peter Sotherland (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central) and Chris DiVietro (Wenonah, N.J./Bishop Eustace) placed ninth and 11th, respectively.

In the first event of the second day, the 110-meter hurdles, Sotherland led the Allegheny trio with a time of 18.20, earning himself 505 points, while Laird finished with a time of 18.87, earning 444 points. DiVietro ran to a time of 20.88, earning 283 points. Ohio Wesleyan’s Justin Blackburn, the multi-event champion, sprinted to a time of 15.07 to take first in the event, a time that left him .17 away from the NCAA Division III provisional mark.

DiVietro improved his score in the next event, taking second among the competitors in the discus throw with a toss of 116-5.25, two inches from the first place finisher John Hepp of Oberlin, earning 573 points. Sotherland’s toss of 95-7.5 earned 448 points, while Laird had a toss of 90-1.5, giving him 415 points.

Sotherland took second in the pole vault, clearing 12-11.5, two inches from the winner, earning 603 points, while DiVietro cleared 10-4, for 393 points and Laird 8-8.25, gaining 275 points.

Laird dominated in the javelin, winning the event by nearly 10 feet, hurling the spear 162-10.25, a season-long for Laird this year, gaining 583 points. Sotherland’s throw of 132-10.25 earned him 449 points while DiVietro’s throw of 109-1 garnered him 345 points.

DiVietro was the top Gator finisher in the 1500-meter run, finishing in a time of 5:18.70, 457 points, while Sotherland (5:27.70) and Laird (5:30.20) earned 411 and 398 points, respectively.

The NCAC Championships continue on Thursday, May 4-5, as the squads will travel to Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio.
