Pfeufer Leading at NCAC Multi-Events
Apr 29, 2006 SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – Allegheny College sophomore Emily Pfeufer (St. Mary’s/Elk County Catholic) is the leader after the first day at the North Coast Athletic Conference Multi-Event Championships hosted by Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio.
Pfeufer and Liz Straus (Kirtland, Ohio) sit in first and fourth at the championships, with Pfeufer currently 131 points ahead of pace for the NCAA Division III Provisional mark, and 171 points ahead of second place Ashley Shaffer of Ohio Wesleyan.
To meet the NCAA Division III provisional mark, an athlete must average just under 586 points per event. Points are awarded on a scale based on the performance in each of the events.
Pfeufer and Straus took out strong in the first event, the 100-meter hurdles, Pfeufer running a personal best time of 16.55, placing first of the competitors and earning 648 points, while Straus placed second, earning 602 points with a 16.95.
In the second event, the high jump, Pfeufer placed second among the eight competitors, clearing a height of 5-1.75, her highest cleared height this season, earning 701 points. Straus placed fourth overall, clearing 4-10.75, earning her 599 points. Ohio Wesleyan’s Shaffer took first of the jumpers, clearing 5-3.
In the shot put, Pfeufer scored 482 points, tossing the weight 30-5, a season best. Straus struggled in the event, picking up a long toss of 19-11, earning her 276 points for the event. Ohio Wesleyan’s Ericka Newell, who is third overall, won the event with a toss of 30-11.75.
In the fourth and final event of the first day, Pfeufer sprinted to a time of 27.83 in the 200-meter dash, earning her 644 points. Straus placed third, placing a half-second behind Pfeufer with a time of 28.30, earning her 607 points. Shaffer won with a 27.10.
Competition continues tomorrow, as the eight athletes will compete in the long jump, the javelin and the 800-meter run.
