Laird in Second at NCAC Multi-Events

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – Allegheny College senior Sean Laird (Monroeville/Gateway) is sitting in second place of 14 competitors at the North Coast Athletic Conference Multi-Event Championships hosted by Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio.

Laird, Chris DiVietro (Wenonah, N.J./Bishop Eustace) and Peter Sotherland (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central) are the three competitors from the Allegheny squad. DiVietro and Sotherland are currently sitting in ninth and 12th place after the first day.

Laird found himself in seventh place after the first event of the competition, the 100-meter dash, as he earned 631 points after running a 12.10. Sotherland and DiVietro placed 11th and 12th, respectively with times of 12.50 (556 pts.) and 12.61 (536 pts.). First day leader Justin Blackburn jumped out to a quick lead in the event, sprinting to a time of 11.48.

Laird quickly caught up in the long jump, as he was just one of two competitors to reach the 20-foot mark, leaping to a distance of 20-9.75, good for 661 points and second place. Sotherland had the eighth best leap, 17-8, earning him 457 points while Chris DiVietro tied for 13th with a leap of 16-8.5, earning 400 points. Blackburn picked up his second victory in the event, leaping 22-1.5.

DiVietro placed second in the shot put, tossing the weight 39-3, earning 604 points, while Laird placed seventh with a toss of 29-10.25, earning him 432 points. Sotherland placed 14th in the event with a throw of 24-6.5, earning him 336 points. Oberlin’s John Hepp won the event by just under three feet, tossing the weight 42-0, good for 655 points.

Laird picked up the individual event victory in the high jump, clearing 6-0, his outdoor season best, earning him 353 points. Sotherland cleared 5-1.25, earning him 434 points while DiVietro cleared 5-0.25, earning 411 points.

In the final event of the first day, the 400-meter dash, Sotherland led the Allegheny trio with a 55.04, earning 597 points, while Laird and DiVietro placed 11th and 12th with times of 56.58 and 56.72, earning 537 and 532 points, respectively.

The second day continues tomorrow, as the athletes compete in the 110-meter hurdles, the pole vault, discus throw, javelin and the 1,500-meter run.
