MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny College women’s lacrosse team (8-5, 4-2 NCAC) guaranteed itself a North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) playoff bid today with a 15-9 victory over the Kenyon Ladies (3-8, 2-4 NCAC).
With their eight wins, the Gators have tied a school record, having now won eight contests for three straight seasons. The 4-2 conference mark is also a school best, as the team had not finished better than 3-3 in the conference in the previous 12 years of NCAC competition.
Scoring in today’s contest started about four minutes in, when Anna Gordon (Portland, Maine) found the back of the net on a pass from Ashley Rogerson (Fairport, N.Y.). The Allegheny advantage would grow to two goals under a minute later, when Michelle Dudevoir (West Point, N.Y./ O’Neill) (right) would score unassisted.
Kenyon would find the board with 24:02 remaining on the first half clock, but a minute later Lindsay Vance (East Aurora, N.Y.) would make it 3-1 in favor of the Gators.
Rogerson would be next to score, but Kenyon would respond with a pair of goals, the second with 13:28 left until halftime, making the score 4-3.
Dudevoir would score twice more before half, while Kelly Towns (Pittsburgh/ Mt. Lebanon) (left) and Ashley Hughes (Wexford/ North Allegheny) would also notch scores for the home team. Those four Allegheny goals to close the half bettered two from Kenyon, making it 8-5 at the half, Allegheny.
Rogerson would make it 9-5 just over a minute out of the break, but the Ladies would go on a 3-0 run to put the score at 9-8.
Things now tightened up, Allegheny would go on a run of its own, scoring four unanswered for the 13-8 lead. Rogerson, Towns, and Gordon started the run, and Hughes capped it by winning a draw control and streaking to the goal on a breakaway before beating the Kenyon keeper.
Kenyon would get one last goal, before Towns and Amanda Urick (Smithton/ Yough) would get the last two scores of the day, making the final score 15-9.
Allegheny out-shot the visiting team 36 to 22, and had a 16-6 advantage in ground balls. Draw controls went 18-8 in favor of Kenyon, but the Gator defense was up to the challenge all day, clearing the ball from its own end successfully on 12-of-16 occasions.
Dudevoir, Towns, and Rogerson led the offensive charge with three goals apiece, with Rogerson also adding an assist. Emily Deering (Hollis, Maine/ Bonny Eagle) led Allegheny with four draw controls, while Rogerson had a team-high four ground balls.
Leslie Stange was between the posts for the Blue and Gold, stopping eight shots.
The Gators will now await the final seedings to come out for next weekend’s NCAC Tournament. Denison will host the tournament in Granville, Ohio, with the semifinals on Friday, May 5, and the championship on Saturday, May 6. The team also has one regular season game left, as it travels to Fredonia on Tuesday, May 2 for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
