Gators Capture Three Firsts at IUP

INDIANA, Pa. – Runners from the Allegheny College men’s track and field team took home first places in the 1,500-meter and 5,000-meter runs, as well as the 3,000-meter steeplechase, to just miss completing a sweep of the distance events at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania Invitational. The missing link was the 10,000-meter run, where Allegheny’s Marco Dozzi (Pittsburgh/ Chartiers Valley) took second.

The winners on the day were Ryan Place (Meshoppen/ Elk Lake), Matt Smith (Sayville, N.Y.) (right), and Chris Carrier (Lyndhurst, Ohio/ Charles F. Brush). Place raced to a personal best time of 4:02.37 in the 1,500, edging Division II IUP’s Eric Kruttschnitt. Smith won the 5,000 with a personal best of 15:46.90, while Carrier took home first in the steeplechase, running to a time of 9:41.50. Dozzi, who took second in the 10k, joined the others in having run NCAC qualifying times, his in 33 minutes and 49.50 seconds.

Craig Ball (Pittsburgh/ Penn Hills) was the only other Gator runner to hit a conference qualifying mark, doing so with a time of 2:01.90 in the 800-meter run.

Leading the Allegheny throwers were Pat Confer (Bradford) and Kitt Tuttle (Alexandria, Va./ TC Williams). Confer placed second in the shot put with a throw of 47’2”, his best of the year, while Tuttle had a career best of 145’2” in the hammer throw, good for fourth.

Members of the team compete again next weekend at the Baldwin-Wallace Invitational, as well as at the NCAC Combined Events Championships.
