GAMBIER, Ohio – The Allegheny College Gators split a pair of conference games with the Ladies of Kenyon College on Saturday afternoon, winning the first game 3-0 before dropping the night cap 4-3.

In the first game, senior pitcher Giannnina Coccaro (Miami, Fla./Palmetta) pitched the complete game shutout, striking out six batters and scattering four hits, while also going 1-for-3 from the plate.

The game started as a pitchers duel, with neither team able to dent the scoreboard until the Gators put up a pair of runs in the top of the third inning, when Brittany Rechtin (Spring City/St. Pius X) singled, scoring Crystal Ptacek (Allison Park/North Allegheny). Stephanie Lasinski (Gibsonia/Pine-Richland) then hit into a fielders choice, plating Abby Bodenlos (Pittsburgh/Shady Side Academy), giving the visitors a 2-0 lead.

The Gators tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning when Ptacek hit an RBI single, scoring Sara Piranian (Mars/North Allegheny), providing the game’s final score.

Ptacek was 2-for-4 from the plate, as no player had more than one run scored or run batted in.

In the second game, the Gators took off with a run in the first inning when Elizabeth Burr (Farmdale, Ohio/Badger) scored on a wild pitch.

The Blue and Gold clung to that one-run lead until the host Ladies put up four runs in the bottom of the third inning, three of which came on a home-run, giving Kenyon the 4-1 lead. The Gators fought back, scoring a pair of runs in their next at-bats, as Coccaro doubled, scoring Rachel Ryan (West Salem, Ohio/Northwestern). Coccaro was then singled in by Piranian, cutting the deficit to one at 4-3.

Coccaro’s run would be the final run in the game by either team, as the game ended at 4-3, after three scoreless innings.

Each of the team’s six hits came from a different batter in the second game, as Becca Rich (Gibsonia/North Allegheny) picked up the loss, striking out three while giving up the four earned runs.

The next game for the Blue and Gold is on Wednesday, April 19, as the team travels to Wooster, Ohio to take on the Fighting Scots of the College of Wooster, with the first pitch set for 3:30 p.m.
