Gators Run Strong at Slippery Rock

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Allegheny College Gators got 27 NCAC qualifying marks at the Slippery Rock Invitational on Saturday afternoon. Vince Werner (Sheffield, Pa.) threw the javelin 189-1, meeting the NCAA Division III Provisional mark, missing his season best by eight feet.
Werner also placed ninth in the discus throw, tossing to a distance of 128-2.
Robert Campbell (West Newbury, Mass./Pentucket Regional) finished just behind Werner in the javelin, with a season-best 172-11.
The sprint trio of Aaron Rape (Zelienople/Freedom Area), Jeremy Walker (Greensburg/Hempfield) and Marcus Solomon (Rockwell, Texas/Dallas Christian) each met the NCAC qualifying mark in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Walker led the trio in the 100-meter dash, running to a time of 11.13, while Rape and Solomon each ran 11.17, with Rape winning by a thousandth of a second. Rape came back to run a time of 21.98 in the 200-meter dash, pacing the trio, while Walker and Solomon ran times of 23.15 and 23.19.
The hurdling pair of Dave Griffin (Pittsburgh/Montour) and Matt Yurky (Homer City/Homer Center) ran season bests in the 110-meter hurdles, Griffin in a time of 15.60 and Yurky 15.83. Griffin followed that performance with a season-best time of 58.00 in the 400-meter hurdles, with Yurky crossing the finish line with a time of 59.87 in the one-lap hurdle event.
Conrad Rapp (Medway, Mass./Worchester Academy) and Erich Wittmer (Sewickley/Sewickley Academy) placed second and third in the pole vault, leaping to a height of 14-6.0 and 14-0.0, respectively.
Pat Confer (Bradford) led a trio of qualifiers in the hammer throw with a toss of 141-5, while Kitt Tuttle (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) and Devin Cruea (Geneva, Ohio) tossed the weight 135-6 and 130-6, respectively.
Confer and Frank Tupta (University Heights, Ohio/Hawken) placed third and fifth, respectively, with tosses of 47-2 and 46-3.75 in the shot put.
Joe McMahon (Pittsburgh/Baldwin) met the NCAC qualifying mark in a pair of jump events, the long and triple jumps. In the triple jump, he leaped to a season-long distance of 45-8.5, while Yurky had a leap of 43-3.0, good for second best on the squad for the year. McMahon then out-distanced teammate Sean Laird (Monroeville/Gateway) in the long jump 21-0.25 to 20-8.75.
Sean Flynn (Kensington, Conn./Xavier) ran to a time of 2:01.90 in the 800-meter run, placing ninth in the two-lap event, while Justin Schwab (Kill Buck, N.Y./Salamanca) placed seventh in the high jump, clearing 6-0, his outdoor season best, qualifying him to the conference meet.
The next meet for the Blue and Gold is on Saturday, April 22 when the team travels to Indiana (Pa.) to compete in the Indiana University Open.
