Meadville, Pa. - The 2006 softball season marks the 25th anniversary of NCAA Division III women’s softball. To commemorate this milestone a 25th Anniversary Team, consisting of ten student athletes and one coach, will be selected via online voting. Former Allegheny standouts Shelley Brown, Gia Celularo, and Laurie Machuga are listed on the 37-player ballot.
Shelley Brown’s (right) pitching helped lead Allegheny to a school record 40 victories in 1988. Brown was named first-team All-American in 1988 and 1989, while also being named second-team All-American in 1987. In 1986, she made Allegheny history by recording 16 shutouts in a single season. She is Allegheny’s second all-time career leader with 77 wins and holds the lowest career ERA at 0.75 and best win percentage at .810. Brown was named to the Allegheny College Hall of Fame in 1999. Brown helped lead the team to its best ever finish, placing second in the NCAA in 1988. In all four of her seasons, 1986-89, Allegheny made an appearance in the NCAA World Series, having placed as high as second, and as low as fifth (1987). In her four years she helped the Gators compile a 130-31 record.
Gia Celularo (left) was named first-team All-American in 1986, 87, and 88. Another member of the 40-win team in 1988, she is Allegheny’s all-time leader in runs scored, having touched home plate 145 times in her four-year career. In 1986, she was an integral part of helping the team put together its longest win streak, as the Gators won 32 straight that year. In addition to being named a first-team All-American in 1988, she made the NCAA All-Tournament team as a second baseman. Celularo joined Brown in the Hall of Fame in 2003, when the rest of the 40-5 squad of 1988 was inducted.
Laurie Machuga (below) was a three-time first team All-American pitcher and a one-time second-team All-American pitcher. She holds Allegheny season records after a 1995 season in which she pitched 200 innings, earned 25 wins, and struckout 307 batters. Machuga is the Gators’ all-time career leader in innings pitched (671.1), wins (81), shutouts (46), and strikeouts (1025). She had the best strikeout ratio and highest strikeout total in the NCAA in three of her four seasons. She holds the NCAA record for most consecutive scoreless innings, having pitched 75 straight innings in 1994 without giving up a single run. With 789 assists from 1993-96, she is also Allegheny’s all-time fielding assist leader. In three of Machuga’s four seasons, the Gators reached the NCAA World Series, including a fourth place NCAA finish in their 39-win season in 1995.
