MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny College baseball team (8-13, 5-3 NCAC) finished its four-game series with Oberlin College (7-15, 2-10 NCAC), winning both games on Sunday by scores of 9-2, 13-2. The sweep puts the Gators in second place in the NCAC East behind Wooster, who swept Kenyon in a four-game series this weekend.

Allegheny started the game strong, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom first inning, by putting runners on first and second after Eric Rich (McMurray/Peters Township) reached base on a fielder’s choice and advanced to second on a Matt DeGiovanni (Pittsburgh/Mt. Lebanon) walk, before a single by Pete Obourn (Farmington, N.Y./Victor) scored Rich.

The Gators came out swinging again in the bottom of the third inning, as Matt Young (State College) hit a triple off the wall in right center. Rich then added to the lead when he hit a two-run homerun deep over the right field wall. The bats stayed hot as DeGiovanni singled to right field. An Obourn hit by pitch put runners on first and second, before Mark Matsko (Beaver) singled to left field, scoring DeGiovanni. A walk loaded the bases, and a Jimmy Fernandez (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) (left) sacrifice fly to left field scored Obourn. Dirk Bonessa (Pittsburgh/Shady Side Academy) followed with a single to left field, scoring Matsko from second base. The Gators batted around before Dan Ayer (Pittsburgh/Mt. Lebanon) walked to load the bases with two outs. Young kept the Gators alive with a bases-clearing double to centerfield, sending the score to 9-0 in favor of Allegheny.

The Yeomen rallied in the top of the sixth inning with three singles and a walk to cut the Gator lead to 9-2.

Schmitt earned the win for the Gators, giving up six hits, while striking out five, improving his record to 1-4.

The Gators tallied eight hits in the game, with Young leading way, going 2-3 at the plate with a triple and a double.

Allegheny continued the hit parade in the second game, as Ayer led off with a single over shortstop, and advanced to third on a single by Young. Rich kept things going with another single, scoring Ayer. A double steal and hit batsman loaded the bases with no outs, before a strikeout and groundout double play ended the inning for the Gators, giving them the 1-0 lead.

After a quiet second inning, Young (right) opened the bottom of the third inning with a solo homerun to left center, giving the Gators a 2-0 lead.

The Yeomen rallied in the top of the fourth inning, putting runners at first and third with no outs, before a sacrifice fly by Landon Lerner cut the Gator lead in half at 2-1.

Allegheny came back in the bottom of the inning putting runners at first and third before a single by Fernandez scored another Gator run, before an Ayer double plated two, putting the Gators up 5-1. A line drive single by Rich put runners at the corners with one out, before a groundout to second scored Ayer. Obourn followed with a double to right field, scoring Rich, as Zack Oblak (Harrison City/Penn-Trafford) kept the inning going for Allegheny with a single, scoring Obourn and increasing the lead to 8-1.

The Gators added another run to their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when Bonessa reached base on a walk before advancing to third on a Fernandez single and a fielder’s choice. A sacrifice fly by Young scored Bonessa, taking the lead to 9-1.

Oberlin opened the top of the sixth inning with a single and a double, putting runners at first and third with one out. A ground out to shortstop scored a run for the Yeomen, before a fly out to left field ended the inning, as the Gators clung to their 9-3 lead.

The Gator bats stayed hot in the bottom of the sixth as a walk and three singles added another run to the Gator lead, before a double to the center field wall by Fernandez and a ground out by Nick Napiecek (West Chester/West Chester East) scored three more runs, taking the Gator lead to its eventual final score of 13-2.

Colt Viehdorfer (Morrisdale/West Branch) picked his second win for the Gators, as he scattered five hits and struck out five batters in seven innings of work.

The Gators recorded a season-high 14 hits in the game, with all nine batters in the starting lineup having at least one hit. Fernandez led the team going 3-4 with two doubles and a single, while six players had two hits apiece.
