Women's Team Places First

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Allegheny College women’s track and field team placed first out of eight teams today at the Washington and Jefferson Invitational.
The team scored a total of 197.5 points, easily outdistancing second place Washington and Jefferson (143) and third place Carnegie Mellon (117).
The Gators’ Emily Pfeufer (St. Marys/ Elk County Catholic) (right) nearly set a new Allegheny long jump mark, covering 17’5.5”, falling one inch shy of Lyn Birdsall's mark set in 1992. Pfeufer’s first place long jump performance comes just one week after setting the school’s triple jump record, as the sophomore continues to improve.
Pfeufer also placed first in the triple jump with a leap of 37’2.25”. Coming in second and third were teammates Elyse Kebert (Meadville) (34’9”) and Amanda Grilli (Washington/Trinity) (33'10").
Sophomore Sarah Sammel (Pittsburgh/ Bethel Park) had her best vault of the outdoor season, taking home first place with a clearance of 11’0.25”. An NCAA Indoor Championship participant, Sammel missed the outdoor provisional standard by 1.5 inches. She also had a good performance in the 100-meter dash, placing fifth in an NCAC Championship qualifying time of 13.56 seconds.
Another outstanding field performance came from another sophomore, as Elizabeth Earley (Venetia/ Peters Township) took first in the shot put with a throw of 38’0.75”.
In the javelin, junior Katie Pankowski (Pittsburgh/ Woodland Hills) placed third with a throw of 104’9”, placing directly ahead of teammates Laura Schuh (Orchard Park, N.Y./ Hamburg) (102’5”) and Earley (101’8”).
In the running events junior Scarlett Graham (Farminton/ Uniontown) paced the Gators, placing second in the 800-meter run in a season best time of 2:23.82, along with placing first in the 1,500-meter run in another best of 4:48.22. Fellow Gators Eva Weyers (Delanson, N.Y./ Duanesburg), Michelle Corkum (McMurray/ Peters Township), and Molly McGravey (Orchard Park, N.Y.) placed second through fourth in the 1,500, running NCAC qualifying times of 4:58.52, 5:04.73, and 5:06.31, respectively.
In hurdle action, a trio of Blue and Gold runners made the finals, led by Kebert, who placed fifth. Jessica Gratton (Bridgeville/ Chartiers Valley) and Liz Straus (Kirtland, Ohio) placed in sixth and seventh, as all three runners’ best time came in the preliminary heat, Kebert running a time of 17.02, Straus finishing in 17.33, and Gratton in 17.50.
Allegheny competes again next weekend, as members of the team will head to the Bucknell Distance Carnival on Friday, April 14 before the majority of the Blue and Gold compete at Slippery Rock on Saturday.
