Gators Take Two From Oberlin Apr 8, 2006 Game 1 Boxscore MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny College (6-13, 3-3 NCAC) baseball team swept the Oberlin College Yeomen (7-13, 2-8 NCAC) in the first two games of the weekend series, with scores of 3-2, 6-5.
The Gators remained quiet at the plate through the first four innings, before Pete Obourn (Farmington, N.Y./Victor) hit a double to center field with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning. A Jimmy Fernandez (Niagara Fall, N.Y.) single over third base scored Obourn, knotting the score at one apiece. Dirk Bonessa (Pittsburgh/Shady Side Academy) (left) added to the Gator lead with a two-run homerun to straight-away center field over the 390-foot sign. It was the first homerun of the season for the Gators. Scibetta walked the first Oberlin batter of the sixth inning. The baserunner advanced to second on a wild pitch, reached third on a balk and then scored on Scibetta’s second wild pitch of the inning. A groundout ended the inning, as the Gators led by the slimmest of margins heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. The one-run lead would prove to be enough for the Gators as Scibetta shut down the Yeomen in the top of the seventh inning, striking out two. Scibetta had another impressive performance, striking out 13 batters, while scattering four hits, and improving his record to 3-4. He struck out at least two batters in five of seven innings. The Gators finished with four hits in the game, with Bonessa leading the way with his homerun. Obourn and Ayer each had a double, while Fernandez singled.
Yeomen pitcher Jeremy Rich followed suit, striking out four of his own in the first two innings. Oberlin led off the top of the third with two singles to left center before Joe Sheehan hit a three-run homerun, putting the Yeomen up 3-0. Misiewicz bounced back, striking out the next three batters. The Gators came alive in the bottom of the inning, putting together their own series of hits. Mark Matsko (Beaver) led off with a walk before advancing to second on a single up the middle by Fernandez. A single by Bonessa to center field loaded the bases with no outs. An error by the second baseman put a run on the board for the Gators, before Matt Young (State College) doubled to left field, scoring Fernandez and Bonessa, and tying the game at three. The game wouldn’t be tied for long, however, as Eric Rich (McMurray/ Peters Township) (right) hit a three-run home run to right field, putting the Gators up 6-3. Zack Oblak (Harrison City/Penn-Trafford) hit a double to left center, and the Gators batted around before the Yeomen were finally able to get out of the inning. Misiewicz saw some action in the top of the fifth as the first two batters hit singles, before loading the bases on a hit batsman with one out. A single through the left side scored another run for the Yeomen, narrowing the Gator lead 6-4. Misiewicz pitched out of the jam as Rich made a diving catch in center field to save multiple runs from scoring. Oberlin would rally back again in the top of the sixth inning with two outs, as Brian Verne scored from first on a double down the right field line, cutting the Gator lead to one run, 6-5. Neither team would score again, as the Gators played tough defense in the top of the seventh to secure the win. Allegheny totaled six hits in the game, with Fernandez leading the way, going 2-3 in the game and 3-5 on the day. The final two games of the series will be played tomorrow, Sunday, April 8, with the first game set to start at 12 noon.
