Allegheny Drops Two to Marietta Mar 29, 2006 Game 1 Boxscore MARIETTA, Ohio – The Allegheny College baseball team got swept in a double-header against the Pioneers of Marietta College (11-5) by scores of 9-2, 5-1. The losses drop the Gators to 3-10 on the season.
With the Gators still scoreless in the bottom of the third, freshman Aaron Skalko (Edinboro/General Mclane) took over on the mound. The Pioneers added two more runs to their lead with a walk and two singles to the outfield. Allegheny responded in the fourth inning with two runs of their own. Senior Matt DeGiovanni (Pittsburgh/Mt. Lebanon) reached on a fielding error, and advanced to second on a ground out to first by freshman Alex Herrnberger (Eighty Four/Canon McMillan). Senior Zack Oblak (Harrison City/Penn-Trafford) singled to left field, scoring DeGiovanni. Two more singles by junior Jimmy Fernandez (Niagara Fall, N.Y.) and senior Dirk Bonessa (Pittsburgh/Shady Side Academy) scored Oblak. The Pioneers, however, would match the Gators with another two runs in the bottom of the inning to secure the 9-2 win. Viehdorfer took the loss for the Gators dropping his record to 1-3 on the season, while Scott Dunn earned the win for Marietta. Bonessa had two of the team’s six hits, going 2-3 with an RBI.
Sophomore Craig Misiewicz (Bethel Park) started on the mound for the Gators giving up just two hits and two walks, while tallying four strikeouts to keep the Pioneers scoreless through four innings. Senior Drew Scibetta (Glenshaw/Shaler Area) took over for Misiewicz in the fifth inning. Marietta took advantage of three Gator errors and one hit to tie the score at one run apiece. The Gators, however, were unable to put any more runs on the board, and the Pioneers clinched the win in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring four runs on five hits, all with two outs in the inning. Ayer, Fernandez and Herrnberger each finished with one hit in the game. Scibetta took the loss, falling to 1-3 on the season, while Ryan Dennick earned the win for Marietta. The Gators return to action this weekend as they play host to their conference rivals from The College of Wooster. Double-headers are set to start at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, and 12:00 p.m. on Sunday.
