Gators Sitting in Seventh at Jekyll Island
Mar 24, 2006 JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – In a field loaded with 13 nationally ranked teams, the Allegheny College women’s golf team, currently ranked 17th, is sitting in seventh overall at the Jekyll Island Tournament, played on the Indian Mound Golf Course.
The Blue and Gold have 346 strokes through the first day of the three-day event. Division I Harvard leads the pack with a 327, while Barry, ranked #8 in Division II is second with a 330. DePauw, ranked 2nd in Division III and Savannah College for Arts and Design (#9 in the NAIA) are third and fourth with a 336 and 337. Southwestern (#9 Division III) and Wellesley (#15 Division III) are tied with 339, seven strokes ahead of the Gators.
Among the teams trailing the Gators are Division III nationally ranked teams Illinois Wesleyan (349, #4 Division III), St. Thomas (349, #5), Oglethorpe (351, #21), Hardin-Simmons (358, #14), McMurry (363, #23), St. Lawrence (369, #19) and Mt. Holyoke (386, #24).
Pacing the first year program is freshman Alison Bruckner (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South), who shot an 82, while Erin Winings (Rockford, Ohio/Parkway) shot an 86. Jaime Reints (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) and Lisa Coleman (Lakeview, N.Y./Frontier Central)) rounded out the scoring four for the Blue and Gold with an 88 and 90, respectively. Also golfing for Allegheny was Lauren Torso (Zelienople/Seneca Valley) who was just off of the pace with a 91, while Jen Vota (Elizabeth/Elizabeth Forward) shot a 116.
The squad competes tomorrow in the second day of the competition.
