March 20, 2006
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Allegheny College Gator women’s lacrosse team started the season with a convincing 8-3 victory over New England College on Monday night.
Ashley Hughes (Wexford/North Allegheny) scored three goals and added an assist, while goalkeeper Lesley Stange (Murrysville/Franklin Regional) stopped 11 shots, allowing just the three goals in picking up the win.
Emily Deering (Hollis, Maine/Bonny Eagle) put in the first goal of the season for the Blue and Gold, before New England tied the game at one. Back-to-back goals by Hughes gave the Gators a 3-1 cushion, before the Pilgrims scored their final goal of the first half, cutting the deficit to 3-2. A Deering goal ended the first half scoring, and put the senior into second in career points at Allegheny, two behind leader Eleni Kacoyianni (1996-’99).
The Gators put the game away early in the first half, as Michelle Dudevoir (West Point, N.Y./O’Neill) scored just 48 seconds into the half before Ashley Rogerson (Fairport, N.Y.) added her first goal of the season four minutes later. Hughes’ third goal of the afternoon gave the Gators a commanding 7-2 lead. After the Pilgrims scored their fourth and final goal of the game, Lana Cannon (Peaks Island, Maine/Portland) added the game’s final goal, giving the game its 8-3 final score.
Rogerson and Lindsay Vance (East Aurora, N.Y.) each picked up four ground balls, while Rogerson forced four turnovers. Deering’s three draw controls were a team-high.
The Gators take their 1-0 record into a match-up with Franklin Pierce starting at 7:00 p.m. in West Palm Beach, Florida.
