Women’s Golf Ranked 14th Heading Into Spring

Mar 16, 2006

MEADVILLE, Pa. – As the Allegheny College women’s golf team heads into the spring season it finds itself ranked 14th in the country. Coming off six great fall outings, Coach Jeff Groff and the team look to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament in the first season of varsity women’s golf at Allegheny.

With just two teams selected from each of five regions, the members of the Gator squad will have their work cut out for them if they want to make the NCAA field. Ranked teams like eight-time defending National Champions Methodist (1), Wellesley (16), St. Lawrence (20), and Mount Holyoke (22) are currently in the Region 1 hunt along with Allegheny, meaning the Gators must play well throughout the spring.

“We’re anxious to get started, said Groff. “We’ve had a good offseason, look strong coming out of our training and conditioning program, and we have several big tournaments that we’re looking forward to this spring.”

The first of those spring tournaments comes next weekend, as the Gators compete in the Jekyll Island Invitational in Georgia March 24-26. The hosts, Oglethorpe, are currently ranked 23rd in the country, and will be one of 10 ranked teams in the field.

A week after returning from Georgia the Gators will head to the McDaniel Invitational. The remainder of the schedule takes Allegheny to Otterbein, Ashland, Westminster, and Gannon. If selected for the NCAA Championship, the team will conclude the 2006 season at the El Campeon Golf Course in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida. The course will be familiar to the Gators, as they traveled there along with 10 other schools on October 29-30. Allegheny shot a two-day score of 720 at the event, good for a sixth place finish.
