Football Holds 2005 Awards Reception

February 15, 2006

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny College football team held its annual awards banquet on Wednesday, February 15 in the Schultz Banquet Hall. Ten athletes received awards, eight four-year lettermen were recognized for their commitment to the program, and the Sam Timer and Bob Sherman Award winners were announced.

The Sam Timer Award is presented annually to an individual that has demonstrated the same commitment to excellence and dedication of holding themselves and the people around them to a higher standard. This year’s recipient of the Sam Timer Award was Jack McCrillis, equipment manager to the team. Recently retired, Jack has impacted the lives of the team’s student-athletes both past and present.

The Bob Sherman Award is given in memory of the 1941 Allegheny graduate and longtime College employee. After fighting for his country in World War II, Sherman returned to Meadville, where he started a near forty-year career. This year, the Bob Sherman award was given to Dr. James Macielak, a 1976 Allegheny graduate and team physician for 18 years.

Of the 117 players on the 2005 roster, 10 were singled out for awards at the banquet. Leading the way was senior defensive back Brad Stotsky (Evans City/ Seneca Valley), who won the Block ‘A’ MVP Award. On the opposite side of the ball, senior Steve Nemeth (Kendall, N.Y./ McQuaid Jesuit) was the team’s Clair Jackson Most Valuable Lineman, while fellow junior Mario Tarquinio (Charleroi) was the squad’s F. Dawson Weber Most Valuable Back. Staying with the offense, junior quarterback Jimmy Savage (North Canton, Ohio/ Hoover) won the Student-Athlete Award and senior wide receiver Kyle Geiser (Orrville, Ohio) won the George Coon Award.

The 2005 Special Teams Award went to sophomore punter Jason Black (Mechanicsburg). Senior Pat O’Neil (Souderton) and sophomore Curt Anderson (Batavia, N.Y./ Batavia Notre Dame) joined Stotsky in representing the defensive backfield, as O’Neil won the Big Hit Award and Anderson received the Allegheny Advantage Award. Rounding out the evening’s award winners were freshman back Matt Feldhaus (Cincinnati, Ohio/ St. Xavier) and sophomore linebacker Ross Simcoe (Coudersport), who won the Offensive and Defensive Hustler Awards, respectively.

Also honored on the evening were the team’s four-year letterwinners.
