Gator Women Run Past Hiram

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny College Gators ended the 2005-06 regular season with a big 80-61 victory over the Terriers of Hiram College on Wednesday evening. The game was one of milestones for the Gators, as senior Valery Medwid (Pittsburgh/Montour) (left) broke the career three-point record with a trifecta made just 1:41 into the game, and head coach Jennifer Reimer picked up her 100th career victory at Allegheny.
Katie Kestler (Pittsburgh/Mt. Lebanon) and Becca Gasciewicz (Grove City/Kennedy Christian) scored 15 and 14 points, respectively, while Jen Latronica (Gibsonia/Deer Lakes) (right) blocked a career-high eight shots.
The Gators (17-8, 13-3 NCAC) jumped out fast to start the game, as the hosts used runs of five, five, and 18 to take a 33-7 lead with 7:31 to play in the contest. The 26-point lead was the largest of the half for the Gators, as Hiram (8-15, 3-12 NCAC) clawed their way back to within nine at halftime, giving the Gators a 44-35 lead after the first 20 minutes.
The Terriers closed to within five points 1:19 into the second half before the Gators started pulling away, using a 5-0 and 7-0 runs to push the lead to 15 with 12:35 to play in the game. The lead kept growing, and as Reimer emptied the bench, the lead increased to 19 at the final buzzer, giving the game its 80-61 final score.
Courtney Steding (McDonald/Fort Cherry) added 11 points, while pulling down a team-high eight rebounds. Kestler, Medwid and Stephanie Wolf (Pittsburgh/North Allegheny) each dished out a trio of assists, while Beth Van Parys (Erie/Villa Maria Academy) picked up a trio of steals.
Hiram’s Cassie Bedard scored a game-high 28 points on 11-of-20 shooting, 22 of which came in the first half. Michelle Kozempa scored 10 points, while pulling down a game-leading nine rebounds.
The Gators have six days off, as they will host a first round NCAC game on Tuesday, February 21 starting at 7:30 p.m.
