BEREA, Ohio – The Allegheny College women’s track and field team had 10 first place finishes at the Baldwin-Wallace Mid-February Meet on Friday night. Sarah Sammel (Pittsburgh/Bethel Park), Emily Pfeufer (St. Mary’s/Elk County Catholic) and Liz Earley (Venetia/Peters Township) each brought home two individual first place finishes, while Katie Stewart (Warren/Warren Area) and Rashelle Glass (New Castle/Shenango) had first place finish in an individual event in addition to a relay.

Sammel and Stewart got things started in the 55-meter dash, finishing 1-2, with Sammel out-leaning Stewart at the tape, with both putting up times of 7.86. Stewart followed up her runner-up finish in the 55-meter dash by sprinting to a first-place time of 27.96 in the 200-meter dash.

The Gators took the top three spots in the mile run, with Michelle Corkum (McMurray/Peters Township), Eva Weyers (Delanson, N.Y./Duanesburg) and Sara Roberts (McMurray/Peters Township) running times of 5:31.45, 5:31.85 and 5:39.11, respectively.

Allegheny one-upped their mile results by taking in the first four places in the 800-meter run, with the four all posting NCAC qualifying times. Glass and Molly McGravey (Orchard Park, N.Y.) finished neck-in-neck, with Glass edging out McGravey by just .71, with times of 2:21.16 and 2:21.87, respectively. Carly Latus (Pittsburgh/Mt. Lebanon) and Caroline LaRochelle (Meadville) also ran season-best times of 2:24.65 and 2:26.81.

The quartet of Glass, Latus, McGravey and Stewart dominated the field in the 4x400-meter relay, covering the mile in a time of 4:16.28, nearly ten seconds ahead of second place Westminster.

Sammel followed up her victory in the 55-meter dash by taking the top spot in the pole vault, leaping to a height of 10-5.75, an inch away from her season best, winning on misses over Stephanie Jarvis of NCAA Division I-A Youngstown State.

Pfeufer and Amanda Grilli (Washington/Trinity) took the top two spots in the long jump, with Pfeufer leaping to a distance of 17-4.25 and Grilli’s a season-best 16-1. Pfeufer did not stop there, as she took first in the triple jump, reaching a distance of 34-6.25, almost eight inches from the second place finisher.

Earley dominated the field in the throwing events, easily out-distancing the competition in the weight throw. Earley’s winning toss of 49-4.5 was nearly five feet further than the closest throw. While her margin of victory was much smaller in the shot put, her toss of 39-0.25 was good enough to secure the top spot.

The next meet for the Blue and Gold is on Saturday, February 18 when the team travels to Kent, Ohio to compete at the Kent State Invitational.
