Gator Men Win Invitational

CLEVELAND – A strong performance in the field events helped pace the Allegheny College men’s track and field team to a first place finish at the Case Invitational hosted by Case Western Reserve University.

The Gators scored 135.50 points, running away from second place John Carroll, who scored 78 total points and Notre Dame College who ended with 70.

Leading the Gators on the weekend was Sean Laird (Monroeville/Gateway), who took first in the high jump (6-0), first in the long jump with a season-best 22-4.50, and second in the triple jump with a season-best 41-10.75. Laird’s leap in the long jump was just over five inches away from the provisional qualifying mark.

The only person to beat Laird in a field event for the meet was teammate Joe McMahon (Pittsburgh/Baldwin) who used a leap of 43-4.50 in the triple jump to help the Gators go 1-2 in the event.

McMahon also placed second in the long jump behind Laird, using a leap of 21-0.50 to set a season-best in the event. Jacob Harrison (Franklin/Franklin Area) took second in the long jump with a leap of 5-10, helping the Gators go 1-2 in the each of the jump events.

Conrad Rapp (Medway, Mass./Worchester Academy) took first in the pole vault, tying his season best with a leap of 14-9 to take first by over a foot in the event, while teammates Peter Sotherland (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central) and Erich Wittmer (Sewickley/Sewickley Academy) took third and fourth, with each clearing 13-6.

The Gators took three of the top five spots in the shot put, as Pat Confer (Bradford) tied his season best with a toss of 47-0.25, while Frank Tupta (University Heights, Ohio/Hawken) and Kitt Tuttle (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) placed fourth and fifth with tosses of 45-9.25 and 45-7.0.

Tuttle also placed second in the weight throw, topping his previous season best by over a foot with a toss of 46-7.5

The quartet of Marcus Solomon (Rockwell, Texas/Dallas Christian), Aaron Rape (Zelienople/Freedom Area), Troy Moles (Royersford/The Hill School) and Chas Moore-Seymore (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Francis) took first in the 4x200-meter relay, sprinting to a time of 1:34.82.

Dave Griffin (Pittsburgh/Montour) took second in the 55-meter hurdles, setting a season-best in the preliminaries with a time of 8.32 before running a time of 8.34 in the finals.

The next meet for the Blue and Gold is on Friday, February 10 when the team travels to Berea, Ohio to compete in the Baldwin-Wallace Invitational.
