Women Take Second at Invitational

CLEVELAND – The Allegheny College women’s track and field team took second at the Case Western Reserve Invitational on Friday evening.

Allegheny scored 91 points, as Baldwin-Wallace won the event with 141. Placing in a distant third place was Cuyahoga Community College with 59 points.

Liz Earley (Venetia/Peters Township) brought in a pair of victories for Allegheny College, dominating the weight throw, an event that she is already provisionally qualified to nationals in, with a throw of 50-2.75, nearly five feet further than her nearest competitor. She also took first in the shot put, winning by a quarter inch, 36-5.75-to-36-5.50 over Christina Martin of John Carroll.

Emily Pfeufer (St. Mary’s/Elk County Catholic) reached the provisional qualifying mark in the long jump, leaping to a distance of 17-9.75 in a third place finish, while placing first in the triple jump with a leap of 36-4.0, just under four inches from the provisional mark.

Rashelle Glass (New Castle/Shenango) also brought home a first place finish, taking first in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:22.06, six seconds better than her previous season best, while also reaching a mark that qualifies her for the conference meet. Molly McGravey (Orchard Park, N.Y.) took second in the mile run, covering the eight-lap event in a time of 5:25.73, giving her a season-best and qualifying her for the conference championships.

The 4x400-meter relay team of Glass, Jaime Shinn (Edinboro/General McLane), Carley Latus (Pittsburgh/Mt. Lebanon) and Liz Straus (Kirtland, Ohio) teamed up to place second in the event, with a time of 4:18.50, a season best for the event.

Katie Stewart (Warren/Warren Area) took third in the 55-meter hurdles in a time of 7.69, while taking fourth in the 200-meter dash, covering the lap in a time of 27.67.

Sarah Sammel (Pittsburgh/Bethel Park) brought home the last third place finish for the Gators, taking third in the pole vault, clearing 9-6.

The next meet for the Gators is on Friday, February 10, when the team travels to Berea, Ohio to compete at the Baldwin-Wallace Invitational.
