GRANVILLE, Ohio – The Allegheny College women’s track and field team took top honors today at the NCAC Relays, hosted by Denison. Each school could choose three representatives for each individual event, with the top two competitors’ efforts then being combined and measured against the competition. Allegheny’s total of 87 points easily bettered second place Ohio Wesleyan’s total of 78 points and defending champion Denison’s tally of 61.

In the long and triple jump relays, Emily Pfeufer (St. Marys/ Elk County Catholic) helped the Gators to a pair of wins. Pfeufer was the second place individual in both events, jumping 17’1.75” and 35’1.5” in the long and triple jumps, respectively. She was aided by Amanda Grilli (Washington/ Trinity) in the long jump and by Elyse Kebert (Meadville) (right) in the triple jump. Pfeufer and Kebert's total distance of 68'7" set an NCAC record by nearly nine inches, whie Pfeufer and Grilli missed the long jump record by just half an inch. In the shot put relay, Elizabeth Earley’s (Venetia/ Peters Township) throw of 39’2.5” was good for first as an individual and was a personal best, as she and teammate Sarah McMahon (Whitehouse Station, N.J./ Pingry School) got the win by over six feet. Allegheny got its final relay win in the distance medley race, as Carley Latus (Pittsburgh/ Mt. Lebanon), Elizabeth Straus (Kirtland, Ohio/ Kirtland), Rachelle Glass (New Castle/ Shenango) (below) , and Molly McGravey (Orchard Park, N.Y.) crossed the line in a time of 12:50.54.

Allegheny’s other top performances came in the pole vault, 55-meter hurdle, sprint medley, and 1600-meter relays. In the pole vault, Sarah Sammel (Pittsburgh/ Bethel Park) cleared 10’6”, tying for the individual win, and helping her and teammate Jessica Pennisi (Milltown, N.J./ East Brunswick) to place second. Kebert transitioned from the triple jump to the 55-meter hurdles to place fourth as an individual in a time of 9.46, as she and teammate Caitlin Nay (Uniontown/ Green) placed second overall. The sprint medley relay was third, as Jessica Gratton (Bridgeville/ Chartiers Valley), Katie Stewart (Warren/ Warren Area), Jaime Shinn (Edinboro/ General McLane), and McGravey crossed the finish line in a time of 4:35.36. Finally, the 1600-meter relay team of Latus, Straus, Shinn, and Glass placed second, as they ran the race in a time of 4:20.97.

The win at the NCAC Relays is a good step on the way to defending the women’s NCAC Indoor Championship title, but for now the Blue and Gold will look to compete well next Friday, when the team will head to Case Western.
