MEADVILLE, Pa. – For the third consecutive game, the Allegheny College Gators (12-7, 8-2 NCAC) trailed at halftime, this time by six to the Ohio Wesleyan Bishops (10-9, 6-4 NCAC), but were able to use a 14-0 run late in the second half to turn a 10-point deficit into a four point lead before holding on in the final seconds for the 65-63 NCAC win.
Caitlin Murtagh (Bethel Park/Seton-La Salle) (pictured at right) scored a game-high 17 points, leading three Gators in double figures, while Courtney Steding (McDonald/Fort Cherry) picked up a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double.
Ohio Wesleyan led for over 17 minutes in the opening period, as the Bishops grabbed a 6-4 lead early, and held on for the remainder of the first half. The Bishops were able to push their advantage to as many as eight, before the Blue and Gold closed to within six at halftime.
Allegheny fought back in the opening minutes of the second half, cutting the deficit to two, three minutes into the period before the visitors from Delaware pushed ahead, increasing their lead to 10 with 12:29 to play in the game. A Katie Hamilton jumper with 10:14 to play in the game gave the Bishops a 10-point advantage before the Gators started their run, holding the Bishops scoreless for over six minutes, while rattling off 14 consecutive points, taking a four point lead with 3:48 to play. Ohio Wesleyan closed to within one on two separate occasions, but their comeback attempts were not enough in the two-point Allegheny win.
Meghan Vasilisin (Munhall/Oakland Catholic) (left) scored a season-high 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field while Katie Kestler (Pittsburgh/Mt. Lebanon) scored seven in the win. Vasilisin and Valery Medwid (Pittsburgh/Montour) each pulled down seven rebounds, with the seven caroms marking a new career high for Medwid. Steding dished out three assists, while Jen Latronica (Gibsonia/Deer Lakes) blocked a game-high three shots.
Ohio Wesleyan also put three players in double figures in the scoring column, led by Emily Lloyd’s 14 points, as Molly Baker and Rachel Messaros chipped in 12 and 10 off of the bench in the losing effort.
The Gators take back to the road on Tuesday, January 31 to face the Hiram Terriers in Hiram, Ohio in a 7:30 p.m. NCAC match-up.
