UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – A handful of athletes for the Allegheny College men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams competed this evening at the Penn State University National Open. On hand for Allegheny were sophomores Ryan Place (Meshoppen/ Elk Lake), Conrad Rapp (Medway, Mass./ Worcester Academy), and Elizabeth Earley (Venetia/ Peters Township).

Entries for the event had to meet strict qualifying standards, and were rewarded by the opportunity to face great competition. For Allegheny, Earley (right) faired the best against her Division I, II, and III counterparts, throwing a personal best in the weight throw of 50’6”. The mark easily bettered her own school record while also provisionally qualifying her the NCAA Championships.

Place was at the meet to race in the 5,000-meter run. His performance of 15:04.56 was a personal best, breaking his own Allegheny sophomore record. Rapp participated in the pole vault, and his clearance of 14’9” on his third attempt was a season best.

A much larger portion of the teams will be in action tomorrow, January 28 at the NCAC Relays, hosted by Denison.
