MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny College Gators (10-7, 6-2 NCAC) avenged an early season loss against Kenyon College (13-4, 5-3 NCAC) by out-scoring the Ladies 38-23 in the second half en route to a 65-56 NCAC victory on Saturday afternoon.
Courtney Steding (McDonald/Fort Cherry) scored a team-high 14 points while Katie Kestler (pictured) (Pittsburgh/Mt. Lebanon) chipped in 11 in the winning effort.
The first half was back a tightly contested contest, as the game was tied with 5:37 to play in the first half. The visiting Ladies used a six-point run late in the period, propelling them to a 33-27 halftime lead.
The Kenyon lead grew to as many as eight with 16:20 to play in the second half before the Gators began their comeback, highlighted by a 23-3 run, taking a 12-point lead with 7:20 to play in the game. The visitors were able to close to within four, but 4-for-4 shooting from the free throw line gave the Gators the nine-point win.
The difference from this meeting from the first was bench contribution for Allegheny, as in the first meeting, the Gator bench had zero points, while today they contributed 25 points, nearly half of the team’s total.
All 11 players that saw action for the Blue and Gold reached the scoring column, while Jennifer Latronica (Gibsonia/Deer Lakes) added seven points in the winning effort. Steding grabbed seven caroms, as Caitlin Murtagh (Bethel Park/Seton-La Salle) dished out three assists and Hilary Collins (Franklin) (left) pilfered a quartet of steals.
Kenyon was led by Anne Dugan, who scored 14 points while Katy Zeanah scored a dozen points while pulling down 11 rebounds for the Ladies in the losing effort.
With the win, the Gators grab ahold of sole possession of second place in the NCAC, a game behind Wittenberg University, who they face on February 4.
The next game for the Blue and Gold is on January 25 when the team travels to Wooster, Ohio to face off against the Fighting Scots with tip-off set for 7:30 p.m.
