Gators Rebound For Big Win

RICHMOND, Ind. – After struggling to find the bottom of the net in the first day of a two-day double header against Wittenberg, scoring just 50 points in the loss, the offense awoke against Earlham, scoring 41 first half points and 88 overall in an 88-52 North Coast Athletic Conference victory, putting the Gators at .500 on the season.
Allegheny (7-7, 3-2 NCAC) was led by Caitlin Murtagh (Bethel Park/Seton-La Salle) who scored 15 points while Courtney Steding (McDonald/Fort Cherry) added 10 in the win.
The Gators never trailed in the game, as the two teams traded baskets taking the game to 2-2 before AC scored the next six points, taking an 8-2 lead with 18:38 to play in the opening period. The first-half lead grew to as many as 18 at 32-14 with 6:13 to play in the first half before Earlham (3-11, 2-3 NCAC) closed within 14 at the halftime break.
In the second half the Gators bettered their point total from the night before with 12:30 to play in the game, cruising to the easy win. The advantage grew to as many as 36 points, when the Gators scored a basket with just over two seconds remaining in the game. All 15 players that made the trip saw action, with 14 of those reaching the scoring column.
Kristen Lyzen (Brook Park, Ohio/Midpark) and Stephanie Wolf (Pittsburgh/North Allegheny) both scored eight points while Katie Kestler (Pittsburgh/Mt. Lebanon), Beth Van Parys (Erie/Villa Maria Academy) and Jennifer Latronica (Gibsonia/Deer Park) each scored seven. Van Parys picked up a team-high four steals while Latronica blocked three shots in the winning effort.
Earlham was led by Chelsea Craywood, who scored 14 points and pulled down nine rebounds, while Tasha Merrill tallied nine markers in the loss.
The next game for the Blue and Gold is on Saturday, January 14 where the team plays in the first game of a women’s/men’s double header against Denison University at the David V. Wise Center on the Allegheny College campus.
