Women's Basketball Falls to Tigers

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The Allegheny College women’s basketball team started the 2006 season with a hard fought 63-50 loss to the Tigers of Wittenberg University on Friday evening in the first night of a two-day double header.
Meghan Vasilisin (Munhall/Oakland Catholic), pictured at right, scored a team-high 10 points, while Katie Kestler (Pittsburgh/Mt. Lebanon) and Jennifer Latronica (Gibsonia/Deer Lakes) each scored nine in the losing effort.
Allegheny (6-7, 2-2 NCAC) got on the board first with a layup by Courtney Steding (McDonald/Fort Cherry) before Wittenberg (7-5, 4-0 NCAC) scored the next six points, taking a lead that they would not relinquish for the remainder of the game. The hosts increased their first-half lead to as many as 10 with 2:16 to play at 23-13 before the Blue and Gold ended the half out-scoring the hosts 6-2, cutting the deficit to six heading into the locker room.
The Gators came out firing to start the second half, cutting the deficit to three four minutes into the period when Kestler, left, hit a three-point basket, taking the Wittenberg lead to 30-27. The Wittenberg lead grew to eight before the visitors rattled off the next four points, closing to within four at 37-33. Wittenberg caught fire, out-scoring the Gators 11-4, taking the lead to double digits before cruising to the 13-point win.
Valery Medwid (Pittsburgh/Montour) and Steding each chipped in seven points, while Steding led the team with eight rebounds. Medwid dished out a team-best four assists while Kestler picked off a trio of steals in the losing effort.
Wittenberg was led by Kathy Hittle, who scored 13 points, while Megan Miller scored nine and Rachel Clark-Hagy and Rachel Dixon each put in eight for the win.
The next game for the Blue and Gold is on Saturday, January 7 when the team takes on the Quakers of Earlham College in the first game of a men’s/women’s double header with the women tipping off at 2:00 p.m. and the men 4:00 p.m.
