Gators Run Past Oberlin

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny Gators (5-4, 2-1 NCAC) started the second half on a 26-2 run, opening up a 56-14 lead with 6:38 to play before cruising to a 62-to-28 North Coast Athletic Conference victory, as the team improved to over .500 for the first time this season.

Katie Kestler (Pittsburgh/Mt. Lebanon) and Valery Medwid (Pittsburgh/Montour) scored 12 and 10 points each, as all 16 Gators saw action with 13 reaching the scoring column.

Oberlin (1-8, 0-2 NCAC) held a three-point, 6-3 lead with 16:47 to play in the half before the Gators scored the next 21 points, taking a 24-6 lead ten minutes later, cruising the rest of the half, taking a 16-point, 28-12 lead into the locker room.

The Gators used runs of 8-0 and 18-0 over the first 13 minutes of the second half, as Allegheny led by as many as 42 before Oberlin closed to within 34 at the final buzzer, as the Blue and Gold picked up a 62-28 victory.

Courtney Steding (McDonald/Fort Cherry) scored nine points while Kristen Lyzen (Brook Park, Ohio/Midpark) (pictured) added seven in the win. Lyzen, Steding and Hilary Collins (Franklin) each pulled down six rebounds to lead the team, while Caitlin Murtagh (Bethel Park/Seton-La Salle) dished out four assists.

Oberlin was led by Meg Reitz, who scored 11 points and pulled down eight rebounds, while Valerie Cain also pulled down eight rebounds in the losing effort.

The next game for the Blue and Gold is on Wednesday, December 14 when the team plays host to the Wolverines of Grove City College with tip-off set for 7:00 p.m. at the David V. Wise Center.
