NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.– The Allegheny College women’s basketball team picked up win number three of the young season tonight against the Westminster Titans. Courtney Steding (McDonald/ Fort Cherry) (right) led the way for Allegheny with 18 points, as the Blue and Gold picked up the 61-48 victory.
The game started with a 4-0 run by Westminster, and half way through the first half the score was tied at 15 apiece. The teams continued to battle back and forth, and with under a minute to go in the half the score remained tied, but a late jumper by Steding got the Gators a two-point advantage. On Westminster’s ensuing possession Steding followed with a steal that created an opportunity for Caitlin Murtagh (Bethel Park/ Seton-La Salle) to get fouled, go to the line, and open up a four-point halftime advantage for Allegheny.
For the half, Steding led the Gators with seven points, while also picking up the key steal. Meghan Vasilisin (Munhall/ Oakland Catholic) went into the locker room with 6 points and 5 rebounds.
The second half started much like the first, and it appeared Westminster might battle back. With fifteen minutes to go in the game the score was 41-37 Gators, but following a nearly five-minute stretch of scoreless basketball, the Gators went on an 8-3 run and never looked back. The score jumped to 48-40 in favor of Allegheny, and the Titans never got back within seven points of the Blue and Gold.
Steding’s 18 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the floor were accompanied by five rebounds and four steals, while Vasilisin finished with 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field, seven rebounds, and four assists. Valery Medwid (Pittsburgh/ Montour) scored seven points in the second half to finish with 10 points.
The Gators were out-rebounded in the game 42-35, but Westminster earned just two steals compared to 14 by the Gators. Allegheny improves to 3-4 with the win while Westminster falls to 0-7 after having won the PAC regular season crown in 2004-05.
Steding now leads the team in scoring with 14.0 points per game, while Murtagh collects an average of 12.3. Murtagh is the leader on the team in rebounds per game at 7.9, and is followed by Vasilisin, who has an average of 6.7 rebounds a night.
Allegheny wraps up a five-game road trip Saturday, December 10 at Ohio Wesleyan at 1:00 p.m. The Gators return home on Monday, December 12, to face Oberlin at 7:30 p.m.
