Gators Drop NCAC Opener

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Allegheny College Gator women’s basketball team dropped its conference opener to the Ladies of Kenyon College on Saturday afternoon by a 64-58 score. Katie Kestler (Pittsburgh/Montour) led the way with 17 points in the six-point loss.
Kestler, right, scored a team-high 17 points, hitting five three-pointers in the game, while Meghan Vasilisin (Munhall/Oakland Catholic) scored 13 and Courtney Steding (McDonald/Fort Cherry) and Caitlin Murtagh (Bethel Park/Seton-La Salle) put in 12 and 10, respectively.
Allegheny (2-4, 0-1 NCAC) came out firing, holding a lead through the first 10 minutes of the game before Kenyon used a 17-4 run over a ten minute span in the first half to open an eight-point lead with 5:11 to play in the period. The Gators chipped away, cutting the deficit to six at halftime, as the Gators went into the locker room with a 28-34 deficit.
The Gators scored the first seven points coming out of the locker room, and took a one-point lead just four minutes into the half, as the game was back-and-forth for the next ten minutes, as the two teams were tied at 51 with 6:28 to play in the game. Kenyon (7-0, 1-0 NCAC) scored the next eight points, however, pulling away for the six-point win.
Allegheny hit a meager 31% (18-of-58) in the game, including 10-of-28 (35.7%) on three-point attempts. The Ladies knocked down 44.2% (23-of-52) of their shots, and hit half of their 12 three-point field goal attempts.
Steding pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds, while she and Vasilisin each dished out three assists. Murtagh missed a double-double by just one rebound with nine boards, hitting 6-of-6 on free throw attempts.
Kenyon was led by Anne Dugan, who scored 18 points while Alisha Moreno added 13 for the Ladies.
The next game for the Blue and Gold is on Tuesday, December 6 as the team travels south to New Wilmington, Pa. to face off against the Titans of Westminster College with tip-off set for 7:00 p.m.
