Gators Snap Two-Game Skid

BETHANY, W. Va. – The Allegheny Gator women’s basketball team snapped a two-game losing skid with a 71-60 victory over the Bison of Bethany College on Wednesday evening. Caitlin Murtagh (Bethel Park/Seton-LaSalle) (right) poured in a career-high tying 26 points on 12-of-12 shooting from the free throw line in the win.
Bethany (1-5) jumped on top at 10-7 five minutes into the game, before the Blue and Gold opened a 15-2 run, taking a 10-point lead that they would not give up for the remainder of the game. The first-half lead grew to as many as 16 when Becca Gasiewicz (Grove City/Kennedy Christian) capped an 8-0 run with 3:12 to play in the first half before the hosts ended the stanza on a 9-0 run, cutting the deficit to seven heading into the locker room.
Allegheny (2-3) used a jumper by Katie Kestler (Pittsburgh/Mt. Lebanon) to open a nine-point lead to start the second half before the Bison chipped away at the Gator lead, closing to within one seven minutes into the second half. Allegheny then used a 13-4 run to take the lead to double digits, as the closest Bethany would come the rest of the way would be eight points in the 11-point Gator victory.
Murtagh was 7 of 13 from the field and a perfect 12 for 12 from the charity stripe en route to her 26 points while Kestler added 13 in the winning effort. Valery Medwid (Pittsburgh/Montour) and Courtney Steding (McDonald/Fort Cherry) barely missed double figure scoring with nine and eight points, respectively. Murtagh pulled down a game-high nine rebounds, while Steding dished out four assists, tops on the squad in the game
Bethany was led by Jenny Place, who scored 23 points, while Renee Shehady scored 16 points and dished out seven assists.
For their next game, the Gators take the road to Gamber, Ohio on December 3 where the Gators will take on the defending regular season NCAC Champion Lords of Kenyon College with tip-off set for 2:00 p.m.
