Halftime Deficit Too Much for Gators

MEADVILLE, Pa., - A 17-point halftime deficit proved too much to overcome, as the 18th ranked (d3hoops.com) Presidents of Washington & Jefferson College defeated Allegheny 70-62 in non-conference action on Tuesday.
Washington & Jefferson (2-1) came out firing, jumping out to a 7-0 lead three minutes into the game and led wire-to-wire, increasing their first-half lead to as many as 17, as the Presidents took a 17-point, 45-28 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Allegheny (1-2) would not back down, as the team kept chipping away at the lead, finally getting it to within single digits with just over three minutes to play in the game, but the closest the team would come would be eight, when Valery Medwid (Pittsburgh/Montour) put in a layup with 15 seconds left, providing the game’s final score.
Caitlin Murtagh (Bethel Park/Seton-LaSalle) put up a team-high 17 points, while Kristen Lyzen (Brook Park, Ohio/Midpark) and Courtney Steding (McDonald/Fort Cherry) scored 11 and 10 points respectively. Leigh Sulkowski of Washington & Jefferson scored a game-high 27 points, 22 of which came in the first half, while Lauren Slampak added 10 for the victors.
Murtagh pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, as the Gators out-rebounded W&J by a 32-31 margin. Murtagh also dished out five assists and grabbed two steals, all team highs. Sulkowski pulled down a game-high nine rebounds, as Dayna Greenfield dished out seven assists.
The next game for the Blue and Gold is on Saturday, November 26 as the team travels west to Alliance, Ohio to face off against the Purple Raiders of Mount Union College with tip-off set for 6:00 p.m.
