RICHMOND, Ind. – The Allegheny College Gators (2-7, 2-4 NCAC) picked up their second win of the 2005 season in dominating fashion, a 41-0 victory over the Quakers of Earlham College on Saturday afternoon.
The Gators gained 472 yards in the game, 216 on the ground and 256 through the air, while holding the Quakers to just 167 for the game (41 rushing, 126 passing). With the 41 points, the Gators have now out-scored their opponents 216-197 this season, despite their 2-7 record.
Mario Tarquinio (Charleroi) rushed for 116 yards on 28 carries, while Jimmy Savage (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) threw for two touchdown passes on 12-of-24 passing for 201 yards. Jim Lieb (Carrolltown/Northern Cambria) (left) was the leading receiver for the second straight game, hauling in five passes for 105 yards and a score.
The two teams battled to a 0-0 first-quarter score, as the Gators were twice held without a score after driving inside the Earlham (1-9, 0-7 NCAC) five yard line, the first when a field goal went wide right and the second when the Quakers held the Gators on fourth down on the one yard line.
The floodgates opened in the second quarter, as the Gators scored a trio of touchdowns, the first when James Jones (Ellington, N.Y./Falconer Central) found Dallas Robinson (Wooster, Ohio/Northwestern), but a missed extra point sent the score to 6-0 with 10:45 to play in the period.
After an interception on the next play from scrimmage, the Gators took the score to 13-0 when Tarquinio plunged in from five yards away with 9:56 left in the second quarter. A Jones 14-yard touchdown rush on their next possession gave the Gators a 20-0 lead heading into the locker room for halftime.
Savage rushed for a one-yard touchdown on the first drive of the second half, taking the lead to 27-0 before throwing back-to-back touchdown passes to Logan Kaleta (Kirtland, Ohio) and Lieb from 19 and 55 yards away, giving the Gators a 41-0 lead with 5:11 to play in the third quarter.
The Gators let the air out of the ball the rest of the way, cruising to their first shutout over Earlham since 1999, and increasing the all-time series lead to 19-0.
Tarquinio led all rushers with 116 yards on 28 carries, while Jones grounded out 61 yards on eight carries. Manny Myers led the Quakers with 53 yards rushing on 17 carries while Brandon Warner grounded out 24 yards in six attempts.
Savage was 12-of-24 passing in the game for 201 yards and the pair of scores, while Jones was 4-of-9 through the air for 47 yards and a score. Randy Kerns, the Quakers’ quarterback, was 18-of-29 passing for 126 yards, while throwing a pair of interceptions to sophomore Nick Jones (Blairsville/Homer Center) and senior Matt Ludewig (Toronto, Ohio).
Jim Lieb had his second straight 100-yard receiving game, hauling in five passes for 105 yards and a touchdown, while Kaletta had two receptions for 55 yards. Marko Fonzi (Pittsburgh/Brentwood) and Michael Sober (West Leechburg/Leechburg) each had two catches, for 39 and 22 yards apiece. Derreck Parkevich led Earlham with five catches, gaining a dozen yards, while James Jewell and Joe White had four and three catches apiece for 26 and 45 yards, respectively.
Defensively, the team was led by Jones, Eric Rupp (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster Central) and Elliott George (Bradford), who each had six tackles, while Vincent Werner (Sheffield) had five stops. Five different Gators had a tackle for loss, while Devin Cruea (Geneva, Ohio) had two half quarterback sacks and Tom Glamuzina (Williamsville, N.Y./St. Joseph’s) and David Pegher (Warrendale/North Allegheny) each had a half of a sack.
Stephen Groce and Mike Thompson each had 10 tackles for the Quakers, while Jerdson Gamble had nine stops from his defensive tackle position.
The Gators take to the gridiron for the final time in the 2005 season, as the team plays host to the Tigers of Wittenberg University (5-4, 5-1 NCAC), who picked up a 45-0 victory over Wooster on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. at Robertson Field.
