Gators Advance to NCAC Finals

November 2, 2005

Box Score

OBERLIN, Ohio – For the second straight year, the Allegheny College (8-7-4) men’s soccer team finds itself in the NCAC Championship, this time earning its spot with a 1-0 win over the Oberlin Yeomen. Alan Carr (Blairstown, N.J./ Blair Academy) got the goal, the 11th of his junior campaign, and fifth of the game-winning variety, with a header 19:02 into the contest.

It was déjà vu for the Gators, as a year ago the Gators upset #1 seed Wooster 1-0, advancing to the finals of the league tournament. This season Oberlin College (9-8-2) played the role of the victim, as the Gators used the goal by Carr to advance the squad to the championship game.

Carr took a pass from David Roberts (Lancaster/Hempfield) and headed it past Oberlin goalkeeper Clayton Combe to score the contest’s only goal, in a physical game that saw 34 total fouls, 23 of them called on the Gators. Overall, AC out-shot Oberlin 10-6, while holding a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Senior goalkeeper Brian Manougian (Rye, N.Y./Portsmouth) picked up the shutout victory, his fifth scoreless game of the season, stopping six shots, all in the first half.

Allegheny’s opponent for the NCAC Championship will be determined in tonight’s 7:00 p.m. contest between the top seeded Ohio Wesleyan Battling Bishops and the fourth seeded Wittenberg Tigers. If the Bishops, currently ranked #2 in the NSCAA/Adidas National Rankings, pick up the victory this evening, the Gators will travel to Delaware, Ohio, but if Wittenberg comes out on top, the Gators will get to host the championship at Robertson Field on Saturday, November 5.
