HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - The Allegheny College women’s golf team wrapped up play in the two-day Division III NCAA Fall Preview today, shooting a team score of 720, and taking sixth place among some of the nation’s top programs. Alison Bruckner (Glenview, Ill./ Glenbrook South) shot a 174 (85-89) and placed eleventh, leading the Gators to a finish that was within nine strokes of two of the country’s top five teams.

Leading all teams in the preview event for this spring’s NCAA Championship was number one ranked (National Golf Coaches Association) Methodist (N.C.), the seven-time defending national champion, shooting a score of 645. In second was nineteenth ranked Southwestern with 702 strokes, while Gustavus Adolphus, currently the nation’s third-ranked team (NCAA Coaches Poll), finished in third with 711 strokes. Also ahead of Allegheny, with 712 strokes and 715 stokes, respectively, were Mary Hardin-Baylor, the nation’s fifth-ranked team, and Oglethorpe, the nation's twenty-third ranked team.

Most of the eleven teams playing at El Campeon, a par 73, 5,830-yard course, were perennial national championship teams, and eight are currently ranked in the top 25. Allegheny, still in its first varsity season, is looking to earn an NCAA bid in its inaugural campaign. Aiding Bruckner in that quest were Erin Winings (Rockford, Ohio/ Parkway) with a 180, Lisa Coleman (Lakeview, N.Y./ Frontier) and Melanie Ice (Beaver Falls/ Riverside) with totals of 185, and Jaime Reints (St. Charles, Ill./ St. Charles East) with a score of 188. Winings placed in a tie for 23rd in the 59 golfer field, while Coleman and Ice tied for 34th and Reints finished 40th.

With the fall season at an end, the team will look to post low scores in its seven competitions in the spring of 2006, and then earn a bid to the NCAA Championships. The first of those seven competitions comes on March 24, when the team returns to Florida for an event to be hosted by Eckerd College.
