Oct 29, 2005 HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. – The Allegheny College women’s golf program is up against the nation’s elite this weekend at the NCAA Preview Tournament. Having won five of the six events in which it has competed, the team is now looking to establish itself as a top NCAA contender. In round one of two, coach Jeff Groff’s squad began to do just that, shooting a score of 361, good for fourth to this point.
Out in front of the tournament through day one is eight-time national champion Methodist, with 333 strokes. Southwestern sits in second with 352, while Mary Hardin-Baylor, a perennial top five team, is in third with 359.
Leading the way for Allegheny to this point is Alison Bruckner (Glenview, Ill./ Glenbrook South), who shot an 85 in windy conditions at El Campeon, a par 73, 5,830-yard course. The score has Bruckner in a tie for sixth, while teammate Erin Winings (Rockford, Ohio/ Parkway) is sitting in a tie for thirteenth with a round of 88. Also in the top thirty in the eleven-team field is Jaime Reints (St. Charles, Ill./ St. Charles East), who posted a score of 93, and is in a tie for twenty-ninth. Rounding out the finishers for the Gators are Melanie Ice (Beaver Falls/ Riverside) and Lisa Coleman (Lakeview, N.Y./ Frontier Central), shooting 95 and 97, respectively.
Final round action of the two-day event begins Sunday morning. The round will mark the end of the fall season for the Gators.
