Soccer Ends Season With Convincing Win
Oct 29, 2005 Boxscore
GAMBIER, Ohio – The Allegheny College women’s soccer team was shooting for double-digit wins and an above .500 conference record heading into a tough Kenyon game today, and the squad ended up getting the win in convincing fashion. Goals by Ashley Hughes (Wexford/ North Allegheny) and Katie Murphy (Venetia/ Peters Township) were the difference on the scoreboard, while senior goalkeeper Beth Van Parys (Erie/ Villa Maria Academy) earned season shutout number eight in her final collegiate game.
Kenyon (10-6-1, 5-3 NCAC) entered the day with a conference playoff bid wrapped up, but was still contending for its final seeding for the playoffs and a potential home game. Allegheny was playing for pride, having all three conference losses come by just one goal, and having lost Jen Bilec (Pittsburgh/ Mt. Lebanon), a senior midfielder, just days before the start of conference play.
The first half was scoreless, with the Gators outshooting the Kenyon Ladies 7-5. The second half shot totals were the same, but two of Allegheny’s shots found the net. Hughes’ game winning game came early in the half, just three minutes in. Murphy’s goal came just nine minutes later, giving the Gators a cushion, and giving Murphy the seventh goal of her freshman campaign.
Van Parys made six stops in her final game, with senior defender Stacy Miller (Wexford/ North Allegheny) and senior midfielder Ashley Rogerson (Fairport, N.Y.) also making the last appearances of their Gator careers.
First year head coach Michael Webber and his team will head into the 2006 season on a two game win streak, and will look to make a return to the NCAC playoffs.
