Gators Fall to Second Ranked Bishops 3-1

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Allegheny Gators (7-7-1, 5-3-1 NCAC) ran into a buzzsaw on Friday night in the form of undefeated and second ranked (National Soccer Coaches Association) Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan University, by a 3-1 score on senior day at Robertson Field.

Ohio Wesleyan (18-0-0, 9-0-0 NCAC) scored first in the game, when Jeff Fisher beat Allegheny goalkeeper Brian Manougian (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) from an assist by Ryan Martin, giving the Bishops a 1-0 lead just over 29 minutes into the game. The visitors from Delaware, Ohio wasted no time in finding the back of the net again, as three minutes later Kevin Lehman scored off of a double assist from Fisher and Nick Skoczen, taking a 2-0 lead.

The offenses cooled for the remainder of the first half, and for the first 20 minutes of the second half before Martin scored the final goal for the visitors, giving OWU a 3-0 lead with just over 22 minutes to play in the game.

The Gator offense would not go away, as the Gators were fouled inside of the box, as Eric Sloan (Pittsburgh/Mt. Lebanon) put the penalty kick just out of the reach of goalkeeper Tom Yaggi, ending the shutout bid for the Bishops with 17:36 on the second-half clock. Despite a feisty attack by the Gators over the final 17+ minutes, the penalty kick goal would be the only points for the hosts in a 3-1 defeat.

The Gators, who advanced to the NCAC playoffs with a tie against Wooster on Wednesday, will wait to see their fate as to who and where they will play on Wednesday, November 2. With a Wooster victory over Wittenberg or a tie between the teams, the Gators would be the third seed in the championships, and will travel to Oberlin, Ohio to face off against the Yeomen, while a Wittenberg win would put the Gators into the fourth seed, as the team would travel to Delaware to face off against the same Ohio Wesleyan Bishops that they faced off against just five days before.
