Gators Drop Fourth Heartbreaker of the Season Oct 8, 2005 MEADVILLE, Pa. – For the fourth time in the team’s five losses this season, the Gators fell in the last play from scrimmage, this time as the Ohio Wesleyan Bishops’ defense held the Gators on a fourth and goal with three seconds left, leaving Allegheny two yards short in a 13-8 North Coast Athletic Conference loss. In the team’s first two games it fell in overtime, as the Baldwin-Wallace Yellow Jackets picked off a pass in the end zone to win the game, before Westminster kicked a 43-yard field goal in overtime for a 12-9 win. A week ago, the College of Wooster kicked a 32-yard field goal with two seconds left before this week’s goal-line stand by Ohio Wesleyan.
Ohio Wesleyan picked up field goals on their first two possessions of the game, as Jason Whitcomb connected on an 18-yard field goal in their first drive, before a blocked punt led to another field goal for the Bishops, as Chris Kras connected from 38 yards away, giving the hosts a 6-0 lead. The defense tightened the rest of the way, as neither team was able to reach the scoreboard for the remainder of the half, sending Ohio Wesleyan into the locker room with a 6-0 lead. In the second half, the Gators used nine plays to travel 19 yards, with their drive stalling on the Ohio Wesleyan 40 yard line. Jason Black’s (Warren, Ohio/Champion) ensuing punt pinned the Bishops on their two yard line, where Monarko picked up the team’s first points of the game with the safety. Allegheny took the ensuing kickoff and used 7:05 to go 51 yards, as a field goal attempt went wide right. With the combination of the two drives, Allegheny had the ball for 12:06 of the first 12:10 of the second half, en route to a nearly 10 minute advantage in time of possession for the game. After a Black punt stopped on the Ohio Wesleyan 11-yardline, Hymes made up for his safety by scampering 89 yards on the next play from scrimmage, giving the Bishops the winning points of the game, taking the visitor’s lead to 13-2. After an interception by OWU, Hymes fumbled the ball at the Allegheny 25-yardline, as Keenan picked up the loose pigskin and moved down the home sideline, cutting the deficit to 13-8 after the two-point conversion fell short. After two three-and-outs for Ohio Wesleyan that netted a combined 0 yards of offense, the Gators took the ball on their own 24-yardline with 3:09 to play in the game. AC quarterback Jimmy Savage (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) proceeded to lead a drive that was 17 plays long. Savage completed passes on fourth and three and third and five in the drive, as the team drove to the three yard line with 31 seconds to play. The team’s second and goal and third and goal attempts fell short before the Gators called timeout with three seconds remaining in the game, with the ball on the four yard line. A Savage scramble netted two yards, but it was two yards shy of the winning score, giving the Bishops the 13-8 victory. Tarquinio rushed for a game-high 110 yards on 28 carries while Savage netted 27 yards on 11 carries. Hymes was the leading ball carrier for the Bishops, gaining 87 yards on eight carries and the 89-yard touchdown run. Nick Rice and Ryan Sir Louis gained 59 and 45 yards apiece on 12 and 11 carries, respectively. Savage completed 11-of-21 passes in the game, including 6-for-10 on the final drive for a total of 52 yards through the air. Backup quarterback James Jones (Ellington, N.Y./Falconer Central) was 6-of-16 through the air for 74 yards. Sir Louis completed 5-of-12 passes in the win for 48 yards while Hymes was 4-for-6, gaining 14 yards. Leading the Gator receiving corps was Kyle Geiser (Orrville, Ohio), who had game-highs in catches (5) and yards (61). Jim Lieb (Carrollton/Northern Cambria) and Michael Sober (West Leechburg/Leechburg) each had a trio of catches for 26 and 15 yards each. Nick Rice led the Bishops with 29 yards receiving on four catches, while Zach Dennis had three receptions for 34 yards. Black led the Gator special teams, punting eight times for an average of 39.4 yards per punt, while stopping the ball inside of the Bishop’s 20 yard line twice in addition to booting a punt 60 yards. Two Gators, Justin Altemus (Clearfield) and Tom Glamuzina (Williamsville, N.Y./St. Joseph’s) each had eight tackles, while Elliott George (Bradford), Brad Stotsky (Evans City/Seneca Valley) and Eric Rupp (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster Central) each had six stops. Altemus had a team-high 2.5 tackles for loss and two sacks, while Keenan picked up a pair of fumbles, including the 75-yard touchdown. Ohio Wesleyan was paced by Bo Mayer and Chad Ellis, who each had 11 tackles while Owen Case had 10 stops in the victory. With the loss, the Gators fall to 0-5 for the first time since the 1953 team lost all eight games during the season, and the six-game losing streak is the longest since 1979-80, when the team dropped the last two games of 1979 before starting the year 0-4 in 1980. The Blue and Gold look to break into the win column on Saturday, October 15, as the team travels to Gambier, Ohio to face off against the Lords of Kenyon College, who picked up a 24-21 victory over Wooster this afternoon.
