BEREA, Ohio – The Allegheny College women’s golf program kicked off its first year of varsity competition today at the Baldwin-Wallace Invitational. It didn’t take long for the women to add to the tradition of golf at Allegheny, as they won their first invitational in convincing fashion, out-pacing second place Baldwin-Wallace by 14 strokes.
Leading Allegheny to its team score of 345 was freshman Erin Winings (Rockford, Ohio/ Parkway), who shot an 83, and earned second-medalist honors in the process. Melanie Ice (Beaver Falls, Pa./ Riverside) came in just one stroke behind Winings, and received third-medalist. Rounding out the top five for Allegheny were Alison Bruckner (Glenview, Ill./ Glenbrook South), Lauren Torso (Zelienople, Pa./ Seneca Valley), and Lisa Coleman (Lakeview, N.Y./ Frontier Central), all of whom finished in the top fifteen of a field of over 70 golfers.
Coming in behind Baldwin-Wallace with 359 strokes were Wilmington (368), John Carroll (373), Muskingum (381), Mount Union (385), Capital (391), and Wittenberg (402).
The men’s golf program at Allegheny has finished in the top 10 at NCAAs on 18 separate occasions, won it all in 1983, and has made it to the NCAA Tournament in 29 consecutive seasons, a Division III record. The women’s team is looking to build a similar legacy under the direction of Head Coach Jeff Groff. “We hope that the tradition and success of the men’s program can carry over into the women’s program,” said Groff.
Today’s invitational, which was held at the par-72, 5,802-yard Mallard Creek Golf Course, was the first of seven this fall for the Gators. Next in the line-up is a trip to Gannon University on Monday, September 19.
