Gators Start Strong, Finish Strong

ONEONTA, N.Y. - Allegheny used a balanced attack to open their season with a 6-1 victory over host Hartwick (N.Y.) College in the first round of the Hartwick Tournament. Senior Ashley Rogerson (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) scored the first two goals of the contest, putting the Gators ahead for good.
The Gators added a third goal from sophomore forward Ashley Hughes (Wexford, Pa./ North Allegheny), giving the team a 3-0 lead heading into the half. Allegheny hit on 75% of their shots, nailing three of four, while holding Hartwick to zero shot attempts in the first-half.
Control by the lady Gators continued in the second-half as Hughes, who finished with two goals, freshman Katie Murphy (Venetia, Pa./ Peters Township), and sophomore Rebecca Rotoloni (McMurray, Pa./ Peters Township) all added a goal. Murphy also led the team with three assists, with two of those coming in the first-half.
Hartwick’s Madison Gardzina hit the only goal for her team off a stolen pass. Ashley Taylor led Hartwick with four saves in the second-half.
Allegheny out-shot Hartwick 15-1 and took three corner kicks to Hartwick’s two.
New head-coach Michael Webber recorded his first victory as the head-coach of the Gators.
The team will remain in Hartwick and will play Scranton on Sunday, Sept. 4, at 2:30 p.m.
