NCAC Names Five Gators to Lacrosse Team
May 14, 2005 MEADVILLE, Pa. – After matching the program’s record for single-season victories following an 8-6 campaign, the Allegheny College women’s lacrosse team had five players named to the All-NCAC team Friday.
In recording their second consecutive winning season, the Gators’ 8-6 mark matched the record set last year and the squad also reached the NCAC Tournament for just the second time in the program’s 12-year history.
Highlighting the selections were a trio of Allegheny players being named to the First Team, including juniors Emily Deering (Hollis, Maine/ Bonny Eagle) and Ashley Rogerson (Fairport, N.Y.) and freshman Ashley Hughes (Wexford, Pa./ North Allegheny). Receiving Second Team honors were senior Ashley Lemmon (Allison Park, Pa./ Winchester-Thurston) and sophomore Kelly Towns (Pittsburgh, Pa./ Mt. Lebanon).
This is the third consecutive First Team honor for Deering (right), who became Allegheny’s all-time leader in career goals this season. She was second on the team with 26 goals and added five assists to total 31 points, good for fourth on the squad. Deering had seven multi-goal games, including four straight to end the season. She posted a season-high four goals against St. Vincent College April 13 and the College of Wooster (Ohio) May 3.
On April 27, Deering scored three goals in a victory over Oberlin (Ohio) College to become the all-time leading goal scorer in AC history and now has 101 in her career. She is also third all-time in total points with 115 and is just five away from breaking the record of 119 held by Eleni Kacoyianni (1996-99).
Rogerson (left) had a breakout season in the midfield, as she earned her second straight First Team award. She tied for the team-lead with 27 goals and added six assists to finish second on the team with 33 points. Rogerson scored two or more goals in eight games this year, including six hat tricks and a five-goal performance in a 19-3 victory at Notre Dame (Ohio) College April 1.
Rounding out the First Team honorees is Hughes, who enjoyed a stellar first year with the Gators. She matched Rogerson with 27 goals and posted team-bests with 13 assists and 40 points. Hughes also led the team with 10 multi-goal games, which included four goals in the St. Vincent victory and three scores in a tight 7-6 triumph over Kenyon (Ohio) College April 23.
Lemmon’s Second Team accolade was her third straight and capped off an outstanding career. This season, the AC midfielder notched 21 goals and was second on the team with 11 assists. Lemmon had four goals and two assists in an April 16 victory over Medaille (N.Y.) College and five points, including three goals, against Oberlin to highlight her six games with at least two goals.
Lemmon (right) also leaves Allegheny with her name at or near the top of several scoring categories. Her career-high in assists this year gave her 29 in her four years to make her the College’s all-time leader in assists over Kacoyianni (28). Lemmon also finished second in career points with 116 and fourth in career goals with 87.
The final Gator to earn postseason accolades was Towns, who earned her first NCAC recognition. She led a defensive unit that allowed just under seven goals per game, including five contests where Allegheny surrendered four or fewer goals. Towns also contributed by scoring 10 goals, scooping up a team-best 30 ground balls and finishing second on the squad with 12 caused turnovers.
