DELAWARE, Ohio – Despite two goals from senior Ashley Lemmon (Allison Park, Pa./ Winchester-Thurston) and junior Emily Deering (Hollis, Maine/ Bonny Eagle), the Allegheny College women’s lacrosse team dropped a 10-6 decision at Ohio Wesleyan University Saturday afternoon.
With the defeat, the Gators fall to 8-4 overall and 3-2 in the NCAC, while the Bishops improve to 10-3 and 4-2 in the league.
The game looked like it would be a blowout early, as OWU scored the game’s first five goals, including three in a span of 59 seconds midway through the first half. Deering finally found the back of the net for the Gators for her first goal of the game with 9:25 to play before the break.
The Bishops answered with a score to make it 6-1, but AC responded with a trio of tallies just before halftime. Lemmon scored off an assist from freshman Ashley Hughes (Wexford, Pa./ North Allegheny), who also assisted on scores by junior Danie Parson (Brook Park, Ohio/ Magnificat) and Lemmon again just before the intermission to cut the Bishop lead to 6-4.
Deering notched her second goal of the game with 25:24 to play to bring the Gators as close as they would get in the game at 6-5. OWU came back to score twice before Hughes tallied her only goal of the game to make it an 8-6 Bishop lead. The hosts would put the game away with two more scores late, as the Gators lost a chance to break their school record for wins in a season.
Hughes led the offense with her goal and three assists, which now gives her 23 goals and 12 assists for the season. Deering’s two goals give her 20 for the season, while Lemmon’s pair of scores give her 19 this season.
In net, freshman Lesley Stange (Murrysville, Pa./ Franklin Regional) made 10 stops in the setback.
The Gators will close out their regular season schedule Tuesday, when they travel to the College of Wooster for a 4:30 p.m. start against the defending conference champions.
