Gator Track Teams Finish Tune-Up for NCACs

INDIANA, Pa. - Despite the cold, winter-like conditions, the Allegheny College men's and women's track and field teams competed in their final tune-up race Saturday at Indiana University of Pennsylvania before the NCAC Championships next weekend.
The women's team was led by freshman Sarah Sammel (Pittsburgh, Pa./ Bethel Park), who continues her strong first season. She tied for third place in the 100 with a time of 12.90 seconds. Later in the pole vault, she provisionally qualified for NCAA Championship by clearing 11 feet, one inch.
Senior Leah Shouey (Franklin, Pa.) braved the conditions to finish second in the 800 behind only Megan Metcalfe of West Virginia University with a time of 2:18.40. Other distance runners to have solid performances were freshman Molly McGravey (Orchard Park, N.Y.), who placed eighth in the 1,500 (5:09.23) and freshman Adrianne Grand (Pittsburgh, Pa./ Keystone Oaks) finished sixth in the 3,000 Steeplechase (13:28.70).
In the field events, freshman Liz Earley (Venetia, Pa./ Peters Township) was the top DIII competitor in the shot put with a third place effort and new PR of 39-4. She would also take seventh in the discus (115-1.5). In the triple jump, freshman Emily Pfeufer (St. Mary's, Pa./ Elk County Catholic) grabbed sixth place with a best mark of 36-0.
On the men's side, the field events produced three top eight finishes. Sophomore Pat Confer (Bradford, Pa./ Bradford Area) finished second overall in the shot put behind Eric Price of Division II Slippery Rock University with a best throw of 49-5. Junior Vince Werner (Sheffield, Pa.) took sixth place in the javelin (186-2) and junior Devin Cruea (Geneva, Ohio) was eighth in the discus (133-3.25).
On the track, sophomore Josh Rhue (Brimley, Mich./ Clonlara) tied for fourth in the 100 with a time of 11.10 seconds and freshman Tom Lee (Mt. Vernon, Ohio) took sixth in the 3000 steeplechase (10:47.90).
