Meadville, Pa.- The Allegheny lacrosse team suffered a close loss to Denison University Sunday, 8-7. Allegheny controlled the game but could not hold on in the final minute, which allowed Denison to rally and defeat the conference rival Gators.
Junior Ashley Rogerson (Fairport, N.Y./ Fairport) got the Gators off to a quick 1-0 lead with an assist from freshman Ashley Hughes (Wexford, Pa./ North Allegheny). Hughes followed Rogerson’s goal a minute later off an assist from junior Emily Deering (Hollis, Maine/ Bonny Eagle). Goals from Quinn Simmons and Meg Wilcox knotted the game at two, midway through the half.
Allegheny closed the first half on a 3-1 run, which included goals from senior Ashley Lemmon (Allison Park, Pa./ Winchester-Thurston), Hughes and Rogerson. The goals put the Gators ahead 5-3 at halftime.
The Gators came out strong to start the second half, as Rogerson scored her third goal of the game to put the Gators up by three. However, Denison was able to crawl back with back-to-back goals by Kristin Frost. Deering answered with a goal to put the Gators up two, but it was not enough. Simmons scored with 0:48 left to pull the Big Red within one. Read Powell tied the game up at seven on a free-position goal with eight seconds remaining in regulation.
The Big Red’s Simmons scored the only goal in overtime off an assist from Liz Hollick with 0:25 remaining in the first overtime. Allegheny could not find the goal in the second overtime and had their three-game winning streak snapped.
Rogerson led the Gators with four points on three goals and an assist, while Hughes added two goals and an assist. Freshman goalkeeper Lesley Stange (Murrysville, Pa./ Franklin Regional) had eight saves on 25 shot attempts.
The Gators look to rebound against fellow conference rival Kenyon College on Saturday April, 23 at 12:00 p.m. in Gambier, Ohio.
